Safe and Natural Acne Treatment During Pregnancy

Pay Close Attention to This

Pregnancy should be an enjoyable experience for all women but it comes with many challenges. Unfortunately one of these is a return to acne. Just when your adolescent years are over and you are enjoying clear, blemish free, skin – along comes the hormonal imbalance of pregnancy and those spots pop up once more.

The good news is that after the birth your body will return to a balanced state and the acne should naturally clear up.

But most women feel they have enough to deal with without putting up with spots. Often women have problems with self esteem as their bodies change and a developing child puts great strain on the woman’s body leaving her often feeling tired.

Treating acne during pregnancy is slightly more complicated as some treatments can be damaging to the developing child. Fortunately most of these would only be used under the direction of a doctor. Just ensure your doctor is aware of your pregnancy if you are in the early weeks.

The first drug to avoid is "isotretinoin" which has been linked to severe birth defects. You should also avoid "tetracycline" and topical retinoids such as adapalene and tretinoin.

The safest way to approach treating acne during pregnancy is to stick to natural and herbal remedies. Many of the ingredients that you can safely use to treat your spots can be found in the food cupboard.

The spots are often caused by the body producing excessive sebum. So you need to ensure that your skin is cleansed thoroughly and the sebum is absorbed by the products you use. One very effective way to do this is to use a face mask once or twice a week. It’s also a good reason for putting your feet up and relaxing for half an hour which will be good for you and your baby.

While my wife was pregnant I would make this mask for her. First take some finely ground oat-meal. Mix the oat-meal to a paste using a spoonful or two of natural honey and some live yogurt. Apply the paste to the face, avoiding the sensitive skin around the eyes. Cover the eyes with thin slices of cucumber. Then relax for at least half an hour. It’s a good time to enjoy a foot rub and some gentle music.

The oat meal will draw the sebum out of the skin and absorb it. Natural honey has fantastic healing properties – you need to make sure that the honey is produced by bees naturally and is not a blended honey produced by bees fed on sugar water. Look out for honey that mentions the flowers that the bees feed on; apple blossom honey, lavender honey etc. Better still buy your honey from a local beekeeper. The "good bacteria" in live yogurt will kill the nasty spot producing bugs that live on your skin.

You can treat individual spots with a little baking soda mixed to a paste with water and applied directly onto the spot. This will dry out individual spots and the baking soda is a mild antiseptic that will kill bacteria.

Enjoy your pregnancy and try not to worry about the odd spot, you should be able to deal with them effectively using these simple and natural ingredients.
